Early Life Experiences

Rapper DC Flyz was born Melvin E. Key Jr. on August 6, 1991, in Washington, DC. Raised by his father and grandmother, the cards, seemingly, were stacked against him. Deep within, he knew he would rise above his circumstances and without excuse, he would play the hand he was dealt.

The golden years of 2005 – 2007 served to widen the distance between the gloom of his past life and the life he had always desired. As a student at Camden Military Academy (South Carolina) DC Flyz was on a course destined for greatness. He was introduced to the world of sports—lacrosse, wrestling, soccer and varsity basketball.

His love of ‘the beat’ led him to the drum line where he earned his ‘cred’ as a fierce drummer. All seemed right in his world until a series of bad choices kicked off a downward spiral leading to his removal from the academy.

In 2014 DC FLYZ was offered a role in a Baltimore based movie “Child Support”, unfortunately, due to legal issues he was sentenced to 9 months in a case of non-cooperation with his probation officer. Just like a performer that he is, he believes that the show must go on, so although he did not make it into the movie, he made sure he was there for the Red-Carpet event performing alongside mentor Tyree Colion with their single DMV.

Living the lyrics he raps, “Pain don’t last forever...keep fighting for what you believe in…,” he fought onward, and with the help of his loving grandmother, he finally earned his high school diploma and continued his academic pursuits enrolling in two community colleges—in Florida and later in Baltimore. Amid the numerous starts, stops, and relocations, he found stabilityand a warm welcome onto the basketball roster with each transition.

Inspiration and Aspirations

Today, his musical roster is a reflection of the grit, the grind, and the goals that fuels his career. The discipline he learned from his years at Camden Military Academy has earned him a feature on several mixtapes with Mr. Dj Sneakydog, CEO and Owner of Sneakydog Inc. He has opened for celebrity Hip-Hop artists such as Mr. Cheeks of the Lost Boyz, AR-Ab, Dark Lo, King of Philly Gillie Da Kid, and has headlined at the legendary venue “Whisky a Go-Go” located in Hollywood California including several other events.

Feeding off of the positive energy and main focus Dc Flyz finds himself linking up with one of the hottest smack/URL battle rappers K-shine which led the two onto dropping a single “Test Me” which ended up getting over 50K streams in Spotify within the first week of its release.

He desires to use his platform as a vehicle to encourage people to believe in themselves and to follow their dreams in spite of life’s setbacks.

Recent Projects - Tours

2019 began with as much fire as the close of 2018. DC Flyz has performed at six sold out venues across the nation and is on track to double his performances of 2018. Owning his label CrankemUp Nation, which he released in 2017, has provided the advantage of managing his tour strategies and promotion, a task he finds both empowering and challenging at times. He recently finalized video production of his well-received tracks, “IDK Why,” “On my own”, and “Can’t stop” from his debut album “Can’t STop”; now available in all digital stores.

Since he started rapping at the age of 16, DC Flyz has produced music in rapid succession. DC Flyz continues to exude the strength, perseverance, and discipline that will undoubtedly support his climb up the Hip-Hop rap charts.
